Branicki Palace and Park

The Medical University of Białystok main seat is in the former residence of the Branicki family, located in the old portion of the city. It is in the main building of a palace-garden arrangement, consisting of the Entrance Gate, Arsenal and Guest House.

The palace courtyard is surrounded by a decorative wall that features two sculptures of Hercules. The palace itself, erected in Baroque style, is made up of the main corpus and two side wings. Over the central break of the façade there is a tympanum presenting the Branicki coat of arms, the Griffon. Above this, there is a sculpture of the so-called Atlas Group. The garden elevation has two side breaks, while the central part is composed of a terrace supported by columns. The interior of the palace is well worth visiting, particularly the freshly renovated ballroom, chapel, and the main staircase with sculptures of Atlas.

The southwestern portion of the palace compound is composed of a French-style park, whose main alley ends with a gate and sculptures of the Sphynx. Other buildings located in the compound are: the Arsenal (built in 1755, now housing the Art Exhibition Bureau and a coffee bar) the Orangery, and Italian and Toscan Pavillions (from the mid-18th century).

The Branicki Park, located behind the palace, is a wonderful place where medical students like to meet and relax from the rigors of their studies. The park is currently undergoing a multi-million Euro rennovation to restore foutains, stonework, landscaping comparable to that of its golden era in the 18th century, which promises to make this magnificent place even more beautiful.
